Daniel Day-Lewis, eat your heart out
We didn’t get into this business to win awards but that doesn’t mean it’s not gratifying to be recognised for the work we do. In fact, receiving awards for doing something we love makes it even more rad. Last Wednesday, Maverick Drinks won IWSC Spirits Distributor of the Year for the third year in a row (and fourth time in five years)! The company only turned five in September of this year, so we consider this a pretty huge endorsement of what we’re trying to do: bring premium craft spirits to people that want and deserve better.
We couldn’t have done this without the help of our incredibly talented producers who make the sublime spirits we distribute. Special mention must go to That Boutique-y Whisky Company, which picked up a few gold medals of its own, and That Boutique-y Gin Company, whose ability to take innovative products from concept to shelf with speed and aplomb is second to none. This year we also began working with Empirical Spirits, which typifies the kind of brands that excite us the most: those that push boundaries in pursuit of out-of-this-world flavours.
Our #ForwardDrinking campaign continues to promote one of our primary goals: to improve the relationship between brands and bars. Over the past year, we’ve travelled the land speaking to hundreds of our colleagues from across this wonderful industry. We believe our role as a distributor is more than just logistical ‒ we want to bring the drinks community closer together and create a genuine connection between makers and consumers.
Education is at the core of what we do and we think a better informed distributor is able to communicate more effectively with their partners and consumers. We now have a larger advocacy team, a new e-learning platform (say hello to JERRY), formal WSET qualifications, and more in the pipeline. In an industry first, we collaborated with Proof & Company, the leading crafts distributor in Asia, to arrange an exchange of people and ideas across continents.
The past year’s been a real blast! We’ve got an incredible and enthusiastic new team, super-supportive partners and industry-leading producers. The best part is… we’re just getting started. Bring on 2019!
